Start with a complete claim file
A roofing supplement documents a supported change to an existing insurance estimate. A checklist helps you ask the right questions; it is not a list of charges to add to every claim.
Gather the latest carrier estimate, roof measurements, labeled photos, material information, and any relevant invoices or bids. Keep separate buildings clearly identified. Use only documents you have permission to process.
Ten checks before you submit
1. Match the estimate to the correct roof
Confirm the property, structure, roof system, and estimate revision. Compare house, garage, shed, and other structures separately so an allowance for one roof is not mistaken for another.
2. Reconcile area and units
Compare measured roof surface area with the estimate. Separate surface area from material-order quantity and waste. Convert units explicitly: one roofing square is 100 square feet. Do not compare a footprint directly with a sloped roof surface.
3. Check waste and product coverage
Use the roof geometry and the actual roofing system. Shingle waste and metal-panel ordering require different calculations. Document hips, valleys, cuts, panel lengths, and coverage where relevant instead of applying one blanket percentage.
4. Confirm materials and specifications
Check that the estimate describes the material actually required by the documented repair. Support differences in underlayment, ridge cap, metal profile, or other specifications with job records and applicable manufacturer information.
5. Document tear-off layers and removal
Use photos and measurements to establish additional layers or removal operations. Identify the affected area. Confirm what the existing removal allowance already includes before proposing a separate charge.
6. Measure flashing, edges, and penetrations
Compare ridge, hip, valley, eave, and rake lengths with the appropriate line items. Identify penetrations and transitions. Document the repair method before deciding whether replacement or detach and reset applies.
7. Support access and related operations
Document slope, height, access conditions, and related work such as gutters or vents. A category appearing on a checklist does not establish that the operation is necessary or separately payable.
8. Verify pricing and applicable requirements
Connect each proposed rate to an authorized, applicable source. Preserve the source’s region and date when available. Verify any jurisdiction-specific requirement and its applicability before citing it; do not assume a rule applies everywhere.
9. Deduct existing allowances
Show the difference between the supported requirement and the work already allowed. Check related lines and estimate revisions for overlap. Avoid charging twice for the same labor, material, or operation.
10. Review the evidence and final packet
Check the line reference, proposed quantity, unit, rate, calculation, and supporting file. Resolve missing evidence, exclude unsupported work, and have a person approve the packet before export or submission.
What a useful finding contains
- Existing allowance: the carrier’s line and included quantity or amount.
- Documented requirement: the condition or measurement supporting a change.
- Calculation: the proposed quantity and rate, with existing allowances deducted.
- Evidence: the relevant photo, measurement, specification, or pricing source.
- Review decision: supported, needs more evidence, or excluded.
How AI can help with roofing supplements
FairSquare connects claim documents and flags potential quantity, pricing, and scope differences for your team to review. The goal is a traceable explanation, including when a proposed addition lacks support.

This is an estimating and documentation checklist, not a coverage determination. Policy terms, documented conditions, and carrier review affect payment. FairSquare does not automatically submit or negotiate the claim.
